Question 1

What is the ASNT Level 3 exam schedule for 2026?

Accepted Answer

ASNT NDT Level III computer-based testing runs year-round in 2026 through Prometric authorized centers worldwide. Paper-and-pencil sittings are held twice a year — typically March and September — for methods not offered as CBT. Applications must reach ASNT at least 45 days before the intended exam window; late submissions push you to the next window.

Question 2

How much does the ASNT Level 3 exam cost in 2026?

Accepted Answer

ASNT Level III exam fees in 2026 are approximately $470 per Basic exam and $470 per Method exam (UT, RT, MT, PT, ET, VT, LT, IR) for ASNT members, and roughly $655 per exam for non-members. Retakes are $315 members / $500 non-members. Total realistic cost including prep material and travel typically lands between $1,800 and $4,500.

Question 3

Do I need to pass the Basic exam before the Method exam?

Accepted Answer

You can sit the Basic and Method exams in either order or on the same day, but you must pass both to be certified in a given NDT method. Most candidates take the Basic once and then add multiple Method credentials (UT, RT, MT, PT) over time — the Basic pass is valid indefinitely as long as your certification stays active.

Question 4

How long is ASNT Level 3 certification valid?

Accepted Answer

ASNT NDT Level III certification is valid for five years. Renewal requires either re-examination or documented continued professional activity (structured NDT work, teaching, publications) plus a vision test. Most Level IIIs renew through the professional activity route rather than re-sitting the exam.

Question 5

What is the pass rate for ASNT Level 3?

Accepted Answer

ASNT does not publish official pass rates, but industry surveys and Reddit discussions consistently report first-attempt pass rates around 45–60% for the Basic exam and 55–70% for individual Method exams. The Basic is the more commonly failed paper because it spans six methods plus materials and processes.
